You Are Here: Home WORLD Sharm el Sheikh Shark Attacks

The Sharm el Sheikh is high quality resort featuring hotels, restaurants, and of course a beach that has year round sunshine and goes toe-and-toe with the best in the world. It is no wonder that the Sharm el Sheikh, which is located along the Red Sea and famous for scuba diving and snorkling, is one of Egypt's top holiday destinations.

But instead of the beauty of the Red Sea, tourists are seeing a different kind of red as sharks began attacking with a German woman being the latest fatality.

Authorities had reassured tourists that they had captured two sharks – an oceanic whitetip and a mako – and the Red Sea waters were once again safe for swimming.

But their claims were proved tragically false with the fatal attack on Saturday.

The earlier shark attacks had seen three Russians and a Ukrainian injured where elderly woman had her hand ripped off and another female swimmer had her leg severed.

Environmentalists warned the attacks may have been caused by overfishing in the region, which has brought sharks closer to shore to feed.

One diving expert said the sharks could have been drawn to the coastline by dead cattle – being brought in for the Islamic feast of sacrifice, Eid al-Adha – being dumped in the water.

The shark attacks will deal a serious blow to Egypt’s tourist industry.
